Fatal Car Accident Causes

According to the Insurance Information Institute, the leading cause of fatal car accidents in the United States is due to people driving too fast for the current road conditions, driving in excess of the posted speed limit, or racing. In 2017, 8,856 people were killed as a result of speeding-related accidents, and that number makes up 16.9% of all traffic-related fatalities that year.

The next most prevalent recorded reason for fatal car accidents is due to people driving under the influence of drugs, alcohol, or medication. A total of 5,507 people died due to car accidents caused by intoxicated drivers. These types of accidents make up 10.5% of all traffic-related fatalities in 2017.

The third most common reason for fatal car accidents is due to a failure to stay in the driving lane. In 2017, a total of 3,826 people died due to accidents relating to drivers’ inabilities to stay in their own lanes. That makes up a total of 7.3% of all traffic-related deaths.

The fourth prevailing fatal car accident cause is due to a failure to yield to the right of way. A total of 3,711 people were killed because drivers failed to yield the right of way and these accidents make up a total of 7.1% of all fatal accidents in 2017.
